For Interested Graduate Students:
Check out what we do. We use sophisticated tools to find answers to questions in both Evolutionary and Developmental Biology. This ranges from studying neural cell fate specification in the model system Drosophila, to learning about the evolutionary processes that produce the fantastic diversity of life by modifying these developmental mechanisms across species. As you’ll see in papers from the lab, our work spans multiple levels, from gene regulation to cell fate specification to neural function.
If you are interested in graduate school, a colleague has written some excellent advice here. UCSD uses a rotation program, which can be a great way of deciding if a lab is really right for you. If you are more used to the idea of “direct admit” don’t let our program deter you and please consider reaching out.
In general it is a good idea to get in touch before applying to express your interest; please email me and include a cover letter with a brief (~1 page) description of your research interests and experience, and a CV that includes your GPA, professional references, and GRE scores.
Information on graduate admissions can be found here, with an annual deadline in early December.
